city trip: Berlin
May 08, 2016
I just got back from a four day trip to Berlin and thought I'd jot down my top tips for Berlin which I've accumulated over the time.
getting there: blablacar or berlinlinienbus
I prefer to travel inexpensively, so I do my research. Going by bus has definitely been the cheapest way (Hamburg - Berlin for 7€ per direction) but usually takes about 30 minutes longer than by car. Make sure to check what times are cheapest for the bus because not all times of the day are priced the same. The times I went with others via blablacar were good, people are nice, I'm not really that talkative when it comes to strangers so I'm fine as long as my boyfriend does all the small talk.
area to stay in: Friedrichshain
The past three times I've been I've always stayed in Friedrichshain somewhere between the train stations Warschauerstr. and Ostkreuz. I haven't stayed in other areas that were especially memorable, so my opinion might be a bit biased but I enjoy the atmosphere and things to do in that area.
sleep: airbnb or BackpackerBerlin
It was my first time staying at a complete strangers house this time thanks to airbnb, but I actually liked it. We had a kitchen to use (we wanted to avoid eating out) and the people we stayed with were really friendly. The time before that we stayed at BackpackerBerlin, a cute and comfy hostel, also with a kitchen, directly in an area full of bars and cafés.
food: Mama Burrito & sons
I loooove Mexican food and this food truck sells delicious burritos! It's right on the RAW premises near other various culture and sports facilities.
bars: Dachkammer and Süss. War Gestern
I prefer bars that are laid back, preferably with comfy lounge areas and low prices. The prices of the bars were alright, normal I guess but the atmosphere stood out to me. Süss. War Gestern. even has a cool retro Nintendo Super Mario console.
dance: Tresor
The building gives off such a cool vibe on the interior part of the club, it was such an unique experience.
tour: Fat Tire Tours
This bike tour is usually led by a college student and in my experience it's been super fun, interesting and you get to see a lot on a bike! I've done this tour in Berlin (twice!), London and in Paris. The people are super friendly and very funny and the tours have just been a ton of fun.
explore: Teufelsberg
I don't really want to say much more other than GO. It's a bit of a hike but it's worth it. There's some pretty cool art and architecture to see.
art: König Galerie and Galerie EIGEN + ART
I didn't have a good look at the König Galerie, it was a bit rushed, but the impressions I had were lovely and I definitely want to go back. While checking out Galerie EIGEN + ART walk along Auguststraße and Linienstraße and pop into a few galleries for example Magic Beans.

shop: the puppets and Made in Berlin
I wanted to buy a ton of things in the puppets but unfortunately couldn't afford anything there but their items were beautiful. Made in Berlin is a second hand/vintage store. Most stores like that are very crowded and unorganized but I really like the things they had and the way the were displayed.
on your way to the Siegessäule... go explore the light installations in the tunnels!

Berlin looks like a beautiful city! These are some awesome tips - usually in Europe I would assume travelling by train would be cheaper but I guess it really depends on where you're going!
ReplyDeleteI'd be so nervous to stay at an Airbnb! I've heard some bad things, but I've also heard a lot of good things so I guess as long as you do the research it's not so bad (and so much cheaper, eh?)

Amazing pictures, Berlin is definitely one of my favourites cities, it is so diverse and has so much to offer. I have actually heard about the Mexican food truck but I've never tried their food, I'll make sure to put this on my list when I visit Berlin again. xx
